Eating Out
There are plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from in the region. Your welcome pack upon arrival at your holiday home will have extensive listings detailing some of these but here a few of our favourites.
Barend, Sandyhills. Just a walk away from Sandyhills beach and Craigbittern House, Barend guarantees a warm welcome. Home cooked food which is also available to take away. Pet friendly.
The Steamboat Inn. A real gem serving up delicious locally sourced lunches, snacks and cakes. Set right by the shore in Carsethorn with a quirky and friendly atmosphere. Lovely pub and always a friendly welcome, log fires and hearty meals – we recommend the fish and chips!
Abbey Cottage Tea Room. Situated in the picturesque village of New Abbey, just metres from Rosewall Cottage and overlooking the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey, this tea room offers a home-and-hearty menu for lunch and afternoon teas.
Mabie House Hotel. Located in the beautiful setting of Mabie Forest with its many walks and play area, Mabie House Hotel is a perfect treat after some fresh air. The food, from its extensive and varied menu, is always tasty and wholesome.
Station House Cafe, Kirkcudbright. A great cafe serving a delicious menu of locally sourced produce. There are daily specials, a fantastic brunch menu at weekends, various special evenings and pizzas on a Sunday (worth trying). If you have the chance it’s well worth booking onto one of the great cookery courses offered at the on-site cookery school.
Carlo’s Restaurant, Castle Douglas. One of the finest Italian restaurants in the area, Carlo’s offers a range of Italian favourites, as well as daily specials. Reliably great food and friendly staff; highly recommended.
Luigi’s Italian Restaurant Dalbeattie. A cosy restaurant with quirky Italian décor, a homely atmosphere and great food. With candlelit tables you can enjoy a quiet night for two. Children are welcome. The staff are friendly and happy even though they are usually extremely busy and always try to accommodate customers. They also offer takeaway options.
Galloway Lodge, Gatehouse of Fleet. Great food situated right next to the main car park. This is a popular place for locals and has a lovely shop for picking up gifts for all ages, as well as a post office. The desserts on display taste as good as they look and all meals are prepared to a high standard; hearty and very tasty. Would strongly recommend the daily specials board and Friday burger nights (booking recommended for burger nights).
Mr Pooks, Castle Douglas. Showcasing the very best produce of the region and serving top notch food, Mr Pooks has quickly developed a reputation for quality. More of an adults experience than for families, the restaurant offers a real dining experience.
