This stunning Scots Baronial style Victorian house really is a special find, lending itself to group holidays, celebrations and reunions. Craigbittern is located in a beautiful, commanding position on the eastern edge of the village of Sandyhills, above a lovely bay on the Solway coastline. The views over the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian coast are quite breathtaking, yet the house sits back from the public road creating privacy for guests.
Craigbittern House and Cottage are ideal for a family or friend get together and just a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Sandyhills beach. The house is in two parts: the main house has a grand, elegant ambience and the cottage has a more modern, cosy feel. Please note the properties have separate entrances. The house and cottage combined can sleep up to 13 adults.
Rooms in the main house include: entrance hallway; dining room; sitting room; snug; toilet; kitchen with range cooker and conventional oven; a small study; The Den (gaming room); utility/boot room; 5 bedrooms (2 en suite); bathroom; shower room; toilet. There are two kingsize bedrooms, a super-kingsize bedroom, a double room and a single room in the main house. Guests can enjoy the large, enclosed gardens to the front and rear and a large driveway. There is also a patio area with seating to the side of the house. We have a fire pit in the back garden for guests to enjoy. The garage has been converted into a heated games area which includes football table, darts and table tennis and fridge.
Please note that Wifi in this area isn’t fast due to rural location. Phone signal can be hit and miss depending on your network.
Craigbittern sits overlooking the Solway and is within a very short walk to the beautiful Sandyhills Beach.
The nearest restaurant is Barend Pub which is a short walk away, as is a seasonal shop just by the beach. The village of Colvend is less than 2 miles away with a very well stocked village shop and seasonal cafe. Colvend Golf Course is located in Sandyhills and free golf can be enjoyed by up to 4 guests staying with us. A seafood van passes through the village every Thursday. The popular Kippford is also nearby where you will find two pubs, two tearooms and a gift shop.
There are lovely walks along the coast and inland with excellent bird watching in the Solway Firth; there is an RSPB reserve and geese sanctuary at nearby Mersehead; famous for the arrival of thousands of Barnacle Geese in the autumn. Dumfries & Galloway in general is renowned for its bird watching with a Red Kite Trail and regular sightings of ospreys.
Other recreational facilities in the area include golf, with an 18-hole course minutes away at Colvend Bay which guests at Craigbittern are able to enjoy for free as part of their stay. The area is perfect for cycling along the quiet country roads as well as mountain biking on the renowned 7stanes trail.
