Family Friendly Places To Visit In Dumfries and Galloway

- May 19, 2019 -

Looking for places to visit with the whole family whilst visiting Dumfries and Galloway? Then we have you covered. From outdoor activities, rainy days and places to eat there are many family-friendly places you can visit throughout the region.

Family Friendly Activities

Drumlanrig Castle – Situated 20 miles outside of Dumfries Town in Thornhill lies the impressive Drumlanrig Castle. An estate that spans 90,000 acres that are filled with history, art and nature. There is an amazing adventure playground and marked walks with beautifully kept gardens around the grounds that will keep your little ones entertained for hours. Rent bikes for the whole family and take a ride through their designated mountain bike trails to see even more. Take a look inside the castle and delve into the history of this spectacular site.

Mabie Farm Park – Perfect for young and old, Mabie Farm Park has lots to keep you entertained for the day. Feed the animals, ride on grass slides and have fun in hay bales. The perfect place to let your little ones loose. And once they’ve tired themselves out, have something to eat in the cafe or take a relaxing ride on the boating lake.

Cream O Galloway – Another place that’s great for both young and old is Cream O Galloway near Gatehouse of Fleet. It’s easy to spend the whole day here with adrenaline filled slides, a flying fox, go-karts, trampolines in the sky and a 3D maze with a 40ft viewing tower. Your inner child will emerge when you explore the nature trails and to top it all off, enjoy some of the best ice creams you will have ever tasted.

Laggan outdoors – For families that like that little extra adrenaline kick, Laggan Outdoor is perfect for you. Start off with their famous double zip wire that spans 820 meters, you can race your family to the end at speeds of up to 45 mph. Next on the agenda is water balling and grass sledging. You might come back a little dirty but you’ll never forget this perfect family day out.

Family Friendly Rainy Days

The Cocoa Bean Company – This place is chocolate heaven so you know that the kids will enjoy it straight off the bat. Workshops are held daily where kids can create and decorate their own chocolatey creations that they can take home with them. Their indoor play zone is a multi-level climbing structure that is part maze, part vertical assault course and all fun! With a dedicated toddler and baby section to keep smaller children happy and safe from the whirlwinds next door.

Dumfries Ice Bowl – A full-sized skating rink that will get the whole family moving. Hire a pair of skates and get out there. You might feel a little like Bambi on ice to start with. But before you know it you’ll be skating rings around the kids. They even have skates that will fit the littlest of feet and penguins that will help nervous skaters find their balance.

Gem Rock Museum – A privately owned museum that has an amazing collection of gemstones, crystals, minerals, rocks and fossils. Far from a static display, the museum is a fully interactive experience that kids and adults will find fascinating. Take home a souvenir gem or rock as a reminder of your time in this thought-provoking place.

Steamboat Inn – Not far from our Craigbittern House is the Steamboat Inn. It is both child and dog-friendly with a great range of options that are locally sourced and freshly cooked to order. It is one of our favourite places to eat in the region.

Kilnford Farm Shop – A great place to stop and eat and with a great value kids lunch box it’s perfect families too. You can even pick up some of the delicious food that you’ve just eaten to take home and cook for yourself in our self-catering properties.

The Usual Place – This place is perfect for lunchtime meals with the whole family. Not only is the food amazing but the building itself is beautiful. And with a kids corner with toys and books, the children will be entertained whilst you can enjoy some well-deserved lunch.

Palmerston Cafe – If it’s a fish supper you want then there is no better place than the Palmerston Cafe. Sit in or take away both you and the kids will enjoy a sneaky treat whilst on your holiday. Finish it off with some amazing ice cream. Although you might have difficulty choosing which of the fantastic flavour combinations that you want to try first.

As well as all these amazing places, Dumfries and Galloway has a wealth of natural beauty that you can see. Check out our Best Beaches post or Mountain Biking Hotspot article to discover some of the amazing beaches and forests that you can explore with the family.

Happy Clients who have stayed with us

  • We stopped here for new year with a large bunch of friends and what a perfect way to see in the new year. The house is amazing and very well equipt, from the decor and furnishings, the hidden den for the kids, cosy throws and a real fire, farmhouse style kitchen and the stunning beach just over the road. There's a lovely coastal walk up to kipford which has stunning views and at the end a pub to enjoy a well earned drink! It's a great holiday home to escape day to day life and I will certainly look forward to spending time here again!

  • Okay, so the best thing about Craigbittern was the space, it was large enough not to be tripping over each other (we were three families, including 6 teenagers). We often go away together, but in other places we have been a bit cramped at some point (parking, kitchen, dining, whatever..). Actually the dinning room is fabulous and we all sat together at the table for dinner which does not happen very often any more. And the games room was a hit. Oh, and I got 4G (on Vodafone) which is a rarity in this part of the country. The wifi’s fine, but it was getting hammered by the kids. We had a very lovely holiday stay in a chilly mid-February and would very happily come back again

  • Perfect is the only way to describe this property and it's surroundings. The house itself set in a stunning location, with each room furnished to a very high standard is so warming and welcoming. If you can pull yourself away from the property, you are never short of things to do, with the beach across the road and coastal walk to the beautiful coastal villages Rockliffe and Kippford. Such an amazing place, perfect for a family get together or group of friends, can't recommend enough. Will definitely be back in the near future.

  • Stunning house and location that the beautiful pictures don't do justice.

  • I recently spent the weekend at this beautiful house and recommend it highly. The house itself is decorated and furnished to a very high standard with lots of attention to detail. It's very well equipped with everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The kids were never bored with the games room, den and toys to keep them entertained. As well as the house being beautiful it is set in beautiful surroundings, right on the beach and with some lovely walks near by. We had a fantastic weekend and hope to return again soon
