An evening with the freelance ranger

- July 19, 2016 -

We were lucky enough to enjoy a ranger session with Dark Sky Ranger Elizabeth Tindal at Sandyhills beach on the Colvend Coast. Elizabeth has many years experience as a ranger in Dumfries and Galloway and you are unlikely to find any one more knowledgeable about the outdoor world in this region.

Our session was catering for young children (aged 2 to 5) and Elizabeth has the perfect skills to get such a difficult audiences attention! First we met Elizabeth at the agreed meeting point and gathered at her car to help prepare for the session, the children were involved from the word go and relished in helping carry the equipment to our destination. There was much excitement when they saw the fire pit and marshmallows!

We headed down to the beach to pick the best spot for our session. Sandyhills is such a stunning beach and the perfect place to spend a sunny Sunday evening. All the children ran in different directions at first, thrilled to be there! Elizabeth soon had them gathered around and we learned about fire safety through games.

Then we lit the fire with a flint and toasted marshmallows, made chocolate bananas and even made our own bread cooked with the help of a whittled stick. The whole evening was informative and relaxed, the children absolutely loved it.

The rangers project offers so many options for different groups, not just for the young. They are tailored to suit the group and can include bush craft, outdoor art, stargazing, wildlife spotting and identification and many more options beside. If you wish to book a private session with one of the Dark Sky Rangers simply click here. Alternatively you can contact Elizabeth via her website here.

Happy Clients who have stayed with us

  • We were very fortunate to stay at Craigbittern with our friends while we had a weekend in Sandy Hills. It's a gorgeous, well appointed house with everything thought out. The kitchen is fully equipped, there's a game room, a den, a nice sitting room, a living room with a fire place, a full-dining etc. Really recommended for a big group of friends or family. Craigbittern is big enough for people to go about their own thing - go for a walk on the beach, read, watch movies, enjoy the fire in the living room, play pingpong, nap, etc. Can't wait to go back and enjoy a weekend away from the city!

  • My first trip to Scotland was to gorgeous Craigbittern House. Stayed with 10+ friends, loved the beautiful landscape, long walks and coming "our" stylish (decorated so tastefully!), comfortable house to enjoy the fireplace. They thought of everything, including the a big collection of dvds and a game room! Best weekend getaway and can't wait to go back to explore more!

  • What a stunning house. We loved everything from the fully stocked kitchen to the cosy decor to the open fires and luxurious bedrooms. They've thought of everything - even a games room, x box, and treasure hunt for the kids!

  • We stopped here for new year with a large bunch of friends and what a perfect way to see in the new year. The house is amazing and very well equipt, from the decor and furnishings, the hidden den for the kids, cosy throws and a real fire, farmhouse style kitchen and the stunning beach just over the road. There's a lovely coastal walk up to kipford which has stunning views and at the end a pub to enjoy a well earned drink! It's a great holiday home to escape day to day life and I will certainly look forward to spending time here again!

  • We were lucky enough to be the first guests here to welcome in the New Year at Craigbittern. The house is huge and beautifully furnished and decorated. Everything you can think of has been provided - a kitchen equipped to cook roast goose for 12, a treasure hunt and games for the kids, an Xbox, table football and table tennis for the big kids, books, jigsaws and more dvds than we have at home! The weather was perfect, which meant the walk through to Kippford on New Year's Day was stunning. All in all an amazing weekend in an amazing house.
